A MILPA is a traditional Mesoamerican farming system, primarily associated with the Maya, it involves intercropping corn, beans, and squash (mostly referred to as the “Three Sisters“) alongside other native and cultivated plants. It is characterized by its rotational nature, often involving a cycle of cultivation and fallow periods to allow for regeneration.
